There’s a clip that our 13 sports camera shot of Mark Mangino that has managed to find its way on "You-tube". It’s the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”.
The footage was lifted from our extended highlight files at W-I-B-W dot com.
Let me say first that there was no purposeful intent on our part to embarrass the head coach or the player involved.
Perhaps because I’ve observed many similar events with coaches cursing out players, the footage initially seemed like more part of the emotion of the game, rather than anything out of the ordinary.
And, that’s the truth.
E-mailed complaints gave me reason to think otherwise --- which is why it was deleted from our site.
In obtaining the footage, we were well within our established boundaries, and while everyone in Memorial Stadium witnessed the event, our proximity magnified the choice of language. To everyone I will say this.
Sporting events aren’t always warm and fuzzy, our reporter would not have been doing his job had he not rolled tape on the event, and sideline exchanges are part of how the game unfolds.
I understand completely why the footage has received some negative reaction. and interestingly, many have commented that the footage provides positive proof of how Mark Mangino won’t stand for a player whose behavior is unsportsmanlike. As a media committed to serving our viewers interests, it’s not our job to judge how the message was given, it is our job to be held accountable for the accuracy of the report -- that commitment will never be affected by anything --- on anybody's dot com.
That’s “On the Mark”.
