Shocker Bowling Announces 2007-2008 Schedule

Wichita, Kan. - As the Shocker bowling teams look to add two more National Championship trophies, they will head down a slightly different path than last season. This year the WSU bowling teams added three new tournaments while deducting two from last season’s schedule. “I think this schedule is the strongest we have put together,” said WSU Head Coach Gordon Vadakin.

The addition of the Leatherneck Classic, the Greater Ozark Women’s Invitational and the McKendree Baker Challenge each bring their own strengths to the schedule. “The Leatherneck Classic has always been an outstanding event with competitive teams,” Vadakin said. The Classic will be held in Moline, IL. December 1-2.

The Shocker Women will have a chance to see some new bowling opportunities with the addition of the Greater Ozark Women’s Invitational in Springfield. MO, January 19-20. This tournament gives the Lady Shockers a chance to compete against NCAA women’s bowling teams. “We don’t ever see these teams so this is a good chance for our women to get some good match play experience for later in the season,” Vadakin said.

The final addition to the schedule is an all baker format tournament, the McKendree Baker Challenge in Fairview Heights, IL. The tournament will be held February 2-3, a month before the all baker format ITC Sectionals which qualifies teams for the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships. “This tournament will be a great help because this is the time of year we need practice on baker bowling,” Vadakin said. Baker bowling is a format unique to collegiate bowling. The lead off or “first bowler” bowls the first and sixth frames of a single game, while the second bowler bowls the second and seventh frames. This continues throughout the fifth player who bowls the fifth frame and all the shots of the tenth frame.

In addition to all the new tournaments WSU is still bowling in five Tier One tournaments. Tier One tournaments are ranked as the most competitive and difficult collegiate bowling events in the nation. While the Shockers will be in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Nevada throughout the season, they will open and end their schedule in their hometown of Wichita.

The Midstates Collegiate Tournament will kick of the Shocker’s season, October 13-14 at Northrock Lanes. As the season comes to a close the Lady Shockers will attempt to repeat as champions at the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships April 17-19 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita.
