LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The University of Kansas' doubles team of senior Elizaveta Avdeeva and junior Edina Horvath has been selected to the qualifying draw of the ITA All-American Championships, and Avdeeva has also earned a spot in the pre-qualifying singles draw, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Wednesday.
The Championships begin on Sept. 29 with two days of singles and doubles pre-qualifying play on the campus of UCLA. Qualifying will then run Oct. 2-3 in Pacific Palisades, Calif., and the main draws will take place on Oct. 4-7.
Avdeeva and Horvath are one of 24 at large tandems to earn a spot in the qualifying draw, where they will join the eight duos that advance from pre-qualifying. Four pairs will then advance to the main draw, filling out the field of 16 doubles pairs from across the country.
As KU's top doubles tandem last year, Avdeeva and Horvath finished the season with an overall record of 23-9, including a 7-4 mark in Big 12 play in the No. 1 position, which was the league's second best. The duo was named All-Big 12 in 2007, and also won the championships of the ITA Central Regionals in the fall of 2006.
Avdeeva will also compete in the 64-player pre-qualifying draw of the singles tournament, in which eight individuals advance to the qualifying round. Should the Obninsk, Russia, native make it through both pre-qualifying and qualifying, she will join 31 other individuals in the main draw.
After playing the majority of her sophomore year in the No. 2 position for the Jayhawks, Avdeeva transitioned into the top singles spot last season for KU, finishing with an overall record of 15-18. Avdeeva also garnered All-Big 12 singles honors in 2007 as well.
Selection into the ITA All-American Championships is highly competitive and based ITA National Rankings and recommendations from the ITA National Tournament Committee.
Kansas is set to begin practice on Sept. 10 and will open its fall season on Sept. 21 at the three-day Cissy Leary Tournament in Philadelphia, Pa.
