LAWRENCE, Kan. -
The University of Kansas Softball team will host the Jayhawk Pink Classic on Saturday, September 29, at Arrocha Ballpark. Admission is free. The Jayhawk Pink Classic will honor individuals affected by breast cancer and raise funds for research in the fight against the disease.
Coaches and players from Kansas, Washburn University, Emporia State University and Iowa Central will dress out in pink as they take the competition beyond the diamond to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The teams will take part in a fund-raising competition to determine the winner of the Jayhawk Pink Classic Challenge.
Fans wishing to make donations in support of their team and breast cancer research may do so in advance by going to www.kuathletics.com - Women's Sports - Softball and downloading a printable donation form or by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page. Donors will have the option to select which team's total their donation will count towards. Forms must be postmarked by September 24 in order to count towards the team total. Those in attendance will also have the option of making a cash donation in one of four donation buckets representing each team at the event.
In addition, Arrocha Ballpark will feature a ribbon board on which fans, for a $1 donation, can place a pink ribbon honoring the person of their choice. Breast cancer survivors and patients nominated by the participating teams will throw out the first pitch before each game.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life student group and KU's Breast Cancer Awareness committee will be on hand to distribute information about breast cancer and upcoming events. Arrocha Ballpark will feature pink bases and ribbons throughout the weekend, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to show their support of those affected by breast cancer.
The Jayhawk Pink Classic will begin at 10 a.m. with Washburn and Iowa Central. Washburn and Emporia State will meet at noon, followed by Kansas and Iowa Central at 2 p.m. KU and Emporia State will meet in the final game of the day at 4 p.m.
