September 1, 2007—Emporia State gained 433 total yards in a 7-3 win over
Western State at the Mountaineer Bowl on Saturday. The Hornets did not
score on four trips inside the Mountaineer 15 yard line on the day but
were able to pull out the win with a ground game that produced 318 yards
on 54 carries.
ESU took the opening kick-off and went 73 yards in eight plays capped
by a Michael Fulton 33 yard touchdown reception from Ben Purkeypile.
Justin Wieser had a career high 186 yards on 21 carries while Seville Ko
added 72 yards on 12 rushes.
The Hornets are back in action on Sept. 8 at Central Oklahoma. Kick-off
in Wantland Stadium in Edmond, Okla. is set for 6 p.m.
The seven points are the fewest points scored by ESU in a win since
defeating Harding 5-0 to open the 1989 season. ESU went on to play for
the national championship that year.
