Groundskeeper Turns Pro

PITTSBURGH (AP) Cincinnati Reds rookie Tom Shearn knows baseball from the ground up.

He may be the only major leaguer who also worked as a groundskeeper. Shearn tended the field for years for a minor-league club.

He was hastily called up to the majors to make a start against Florida Sunday, and he got his first victory.

But it's not just his pitching style that impresses Rangers' grounds director Dennis Klein. Klein says Shearn knows how to pick up a shovel, adding: ``Somebody must have raised him right.''
