Ichabods Golf Team Gets National Ranking

The Washburn Ichabod golf team was picked seventh in the Golf World/Nike
Golf Coaches Poll which was released today. The Ichabods, who finished a
school-best fifth at the NCAA National Tournament last May, will open
the 2007-08 season for the second consecutive season at the Kiawah
Island Invitational Sept. 10-11 in South Carolina.
The Ichabods return four of its five golfers off the fifth-place squad
from a year ago including Matt Ewald, who led the Ichabods with a
team-best stroke average of 72.9 while recording eight top-five finishes
during the 2006-07 season earning second team all-American accolades.
Ewald was also named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player.
Also returning is two others who received honorable mention All-American
honors in Ryan Deutsch and John Robbins. Deutsch won the NCAA Central
Regional played in Joplin, Mo., and recorded a 73.8 stroke average last
season. He was named to the All-MIAA golf team as well. Robbins carded
the best finish by any Ichabod golfer at the national tournament placing
in a tie for fifth with a 9-over, 293 for four rounds. Robbins was also
a first team All-MIAA pick with a 75.7 stroke average this season.
The fourth returning golfer off the fifth place team is Matt Lazzo, who
earned all-MIAA and all-region honors after joining the Ichabods in time
for the spring semester last season.
