MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the sixth-straight year, Kansas State has swept their home opener, as the Cats defeated Houston 3-0 on Tuesday. No. 25 K-State remains undefeated on the season with a 4-0 record after winning in games of 30-18, 30-16, 30-23.
The Cats finished with their second match of hitting about .300 as K-State had a percentage of .311 on the night with 48 total kills, 15 errors on 106 attempts. Houston was held to .170 hitting with 35 kills and 100 attempts.
Junior Rita Liliom led in kills for the Cats, knocking down 11 on .391 hitting, in addition to putting back three block assists. Three K-State hitters, Kelsey Chipman, Nataly Korobkova and Kelsey Chipman, tallied eight kills. Angie Lastra again led on the defensive end with 18 digs.
The team finished with 12 service aces on the night, including three from each Jenny Jantsch, Stacey Spiegelberg and Lastra. The feat marks a match high for Jantsch and Lastra.
Coming out of the break, Houston looked to hold the Cats from winning their home opener in a sweep as it took the early lead. K-State’s first lead in the final game came at 19-18. From that point, K-State went on an 11-5 run including the final eight points to seal the victory.
The Cats next travel to Hawaii for the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic. The first matchup against No. 16 Hawaii will take place Friday, Aug. 31st. The Wildcats will also face Louisville and UCLA at the tournament. For complete recaps during the event, please visit www.kstatesports.com.
