WICHITA, Kan. - The No. 16 Lady Blues used a strong first game and then
fought off Newman in the final two to sweep the Jets, 3-0 (30-15, 30-21,
31-29) Tuesday night on the road. Washburn (5-0) will continue its
nine-match, season-opening road trip with four matches in the Rockhurst
Classic Friday and Saturday.
Senior Tessa Jones led Washburn with 14 kills and senior Mandi Cox added
nine and led with a .400 attack percentage. Sophomore Kate Hampson led
with 30 assists and junior Carolyn Raynes came off the bench for 14. On
defense senior Erica Cowhick led with nine digs, junior Monica Miesner
added eight and Cox led with three blocks.
The Lady Blues won easily in the first game and then they used a 7-1 run
to finish off the Jets in the second game. In game three Washburn never
led until the end. The Jets led by scores of 14-8 and 26-23 before
Washburn came back and tied the game at 29-29. Jones then set down the
final two kills for the victory.
