The kick-off to the college football season is coming quickly.
It’s the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”. and… I say kick-off with special emphasis.
As you may know… this is the year that the college game is teeing it up from the 30 yard line instead of the 35.
I’ll tell you, i think it will be the most impactful five yards in the history of college football. It’s that big of a deal.
in the State of Kansas… even a modest tail wind would ordinarily have pushed the kick-off well beyond the endline.
but not anymore.
Kickers will have to boot it a good 75 yards plus to produce a touchback….
and into a strong wind? it means the kickoff isn’t just for starting the game anymore. as a result --- you bet k-state and kansas will load their kickoff units with marquee players. problems? You bet… injuries resulting from high speed impacts will undoubtedly put key personnel on the sidelines and have head coaches explaining the rationale of putting so and so on special teams.
their answer? no choice.
weak kickoff units could spell disaster.
The big picture is that a kicker who can boot the ball long, and returners who can bring it back at a world class clip will be regarded as five star recruits. We’re about to kick-off the college football season … and this year --- I’d advise you to be in your seats for the opening play. That’s “On the Mark”.
