7 Hornets Named Preseason MIAA

EMPORIA, KAN. (August 19, 2007)--Seven Emporia State football players were named Preseason All-MIAA by D2Football.com over the weekend. Four Hornets were named second-team and three Hornets made the third-team.

Senior Joel Griffiths and juniors Seville Ko and Lucas Sullivan were named to the second-team offensive team while senior A.J. Franklin earned second-team honors on defense. Griffiths was a second-team All-MIAA selection last season on the offensive line. Ko is the second leading returning rusher in the MIAA despite splitting carries with El Ray Henry last season. H-back Sullivan was named a preseason All-American by the Football Gazette this year. Franklin is a two-time honorable mention All-MIAA defensive lineman.

Seniors Jake Richter and Matt Demicoli were named third-team preseason All-MIAA and junior Johhny Torres made third-team on special teams. Richter led the Hornets in tackles and interceptions from his safety position last year. Demicoli has been the second leading tackler for ESU the past two years at linebacker. Torres was third in the MIAA in average punting last year.

ESU opens the season on September 1 at Western State in Gunnison, Colo. The home opener is set for September 15 against Southwest Baptist.
