Wildcats counting on sophomore QB to keep growing

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) _ When Kansas State coach Ron Prince chose ``The Power of One'' as this year's theme, he wasn't thinking about jersey numbers.
It's only a coincidence that sophomore quarterback Josh Freeman
wears No. 1.
But if the Wildcats are to match or improve on last year's 7-6
record and bowl appearance in Prince's first year, a lot will
depend on which No. 1 shows up each Saturday this fall.
Last year, Freeman won the job from Dylan Meier to become Kansas
State's first freshman starter at quarterback since 1976. He threw
for school freshman record 1,780 yards and engineered a 45-42 upset
of then-No. 4 Texas by passing for three touchdowns and running for
another.
But he threw more than twice as many interceptions as touchdowns
-- 15 to six. Two of those picks came in a 37-10 loss to Rutgers in
the Texas Bowl.
The problem, he said, wasn't always his arm. He says he's worked
all offseason on footwork drills.
