Coming off a 27-9 season and with two returning All-Americans, the Lady Blues earned a No. 16 ranking in the CSTV/American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll released Tuesday.
Washburn, which finished 23rd last year, was one of three MIAA teams
ranked with Truman earning a No. 7 vote and Central Missouri coming in
at 12th. Tampa was picked to repeat after winning the national
championship last year.
The Lady Blues began practice last week and will start the season August
24-25 at the Nova Southeastern Sharks Classic in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida. The home schedule will begin September 4 with a match against
Missouri-Rolla at Lee Arena.
Picked to win the MIAA by the coaches in the preseason poll, Washburn
will start conference play September 12 at Fort Hays State.
Washburn went 27-9 last year and won the MIAA West Division. The Lady
Blues finished second in the MIAA tournament and advanced to the NCAA
tournament for the third straight year. Senior Tessa Jones returns after
earning honorable mention All-America honors last year from the AVCA.
She and Monica Miesner also earned All-American honors in 2005 and
Miesner will return for her junior year after earning a medical redshirt
Jones joined seniors Mandi Cox and Erica Cowhick on the AVCA all-region
team last year and all three earned all-MIAA accolades.
