NEBRASKA REIGNS SUPREME ATOP CSTV/AVCA PRESEASON POLL
LEXINGTON, Ky. - After rolling through the 2006 season with a 33-1 record and the coveted NCAA Division I National Championship, the University of Nebraska volleyball team finds itself atop the rankings at the beginning of a new campaign. For the third consecutive season, the Huskers sit pretty in the No. 1 spot on the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll after its release by the AVCA headquarters on Tuesday.
Three starters and nine letterwinners return to head coach John Cook’s Husker squad in 2007, led by, arguably, two of the most talented collegiate players in the country in senior right side/opposite Sarah Pavan and redshirted senior outside hitter Christina Houghtelling, both of whom have combined to capture the previous two AVCA Player of the Year awards. Pavan, last year’s P-O-Y recipient, was named the 2006 NCAA Women’s Collegiate Athlete of the Year after being a first-team AVCA All-American, as well as a first-team all-Big 12 honoree. Houghtelling returns from an injury-ridden 2006 season, after being named a first-team AVCA All-American and the association’s Player of the Year in 2005, as well as garnering first-team all-Big 12 honors that season.
