Washburn will once again be tested early and often when it starts the 2007-08 men’s basketball season. Head coach Bob Chipman and the Ichabods announced their schedule this week, which begins with three straight games against NCAA Division I opponents, including a regular season game against Kansas.
Washburn will begin the season in familiar territory when it plays an exhibition game at Nevada-Las Vegas November 6. It will be the third straight trip to UNLV and the eighth straight year that the Ichabods have made a visit to Las Vegas to play.
Following the game with the Rebels Washburn will play another tune up at Missouri-Kansas City in Municipal Auditorium on November 13. That game will count for the Kangaroos but will be an exhibition for WU.
The 103rd season of Washburn basketball will officially tip off with a game against Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse on November 15. The Ichabods and Jayhawks met last year in an exhibition and last played a regular season game in the 1996-97 season.
Three non-conference tournaments will also test the Ichabods before they begin play in the MIAA season. They’ll play in St. Joseph, Missouri, in the Hilliard Classic, hosted by Missouri Western and the Griffons will later come to Topeka to be one of four teams in Washburn’s AM580 WIBW Radio Holiday Classic during the Thanksgiving weekend. Washburn will wrap up the non-conference schedule with two games in the St. Mary’s Rattler Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
Home games with Central Oklahoma and Baker are also scheduled.
The MIAA season starts with a trip to Missouri Western on January 2 and ends on March 1 at Central Missouri. In-state rival Emporia State will host the Ichabods on January 9 and then make a trip to Lee Arena on February 23.
Washburn will look to return to Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium on March 7-9 when the MIAA Postseason Tournament begins. The NCAA South Central Region tournament will be March 15-18 and then the Elite Eight will be March 26-29 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
