Royals on wrong end of slugfest

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez banged his 500th home run on Saturday and, by the time the afternoon was over, the Royals must have felt like the Yankees had 500 other hits.
It just seemed that way. The Bronx Blasters did sock, spray and splatter a total of 21 hits around Yankee Stadium on their merry way to a 16-8 victory in front of 54,056 sun and A-Rod worshippers.

Rodriguez's No. 500 came in the Yankees' four-run first inning against Kyle Davies, making his first Royals start. Derek Jeter singled, Bobby Abreu walked and Rodriguez lifted Davies' next pitch high over the left-field wall.

Hideki Matsui's double and Robinson Cano's triple gave the Yankees the cycle in the inning.

Davies lasted only three innings in his first outing since being obtained from the Braves in a trade deadline move. By the fourth, the Royals were down, 6-2.

Give Kansas City credit for a bounceback. The Royals chased Yankees starter Phil Hughes in the fifth. David DeJesus belted a two-run homer, Mark Teahen singled, Billy Butler hit an RBI double and -- upon reliever Mike Myers' arrival -- Ross Gload doubled for a 6-6 tie.

But that didn't last, as the Yankees hammered away.

Rodriguez finished 3-for-4 with a walk. Robinson Cano had four hits. Three each were posted by Jeter, Abreu, Matsui and Wilson Betemit. Abreu had a home run. Cano and Betemit each joined Rodriguez with three RBIs.

The Royals' bullpen, so effective of late, gave up 11 runs. Zack Greinke, who pitched in the seventh, didn't retire any of the five batters he faced.
