New York, NY – With baseball season just a few weeks away, New York-based startup Fungo Media announced Tuesday the national rollout of its first product, GameChanger – a web-and mobile-based tool that replaces traditional pencil-and-paper scorekeeping methods to delivers real-time local youth sports game updates to the Internet. The product is initially available for baseball and softball teams, ranging from little league to college.

By scoring a game using the free and easy GameChanger iPhone application, coaches and scorekeepers at the field generate live play-by-play content, or GameStreams, that are beamed directly to the Internet – allowing fans, parents and local media outlets to follow the action online in real time. If fans have access to the internet – including on any mobile web browser – they can follow the game live.

“Live online game feeds have always been reserved for professional sports – until now,” said Ted Sullivan, CEO of Fungo Media. “The ability to ‘watch’ a local youth game while at work or in a business meeting, say, is absolutely priceless – just ask any working parent with a kid on the field. We’re excited to offer new ways to digitally generate and distribute content at this level.”

The technology officially went live in January 2010 at the American Baseball Coaches Association annual conference in Dallas, where it was voted “Best in Show” by conference organizers and Collegiate Baseball Magazine. Today, in anticipation of Opening Day, coaches and scorekeepers from little leagues and universities nationwide are registering in droves to deliver live GameStreams for their fans.

“I’ve been in baseball a long time, and I’ve seen a lot of ideas come and go,” said veteran Stanford University associate head baseball coach and Fungo advisor Dean Stotz. “But GameChanger is truly that – a game changer. For a college team with a huge fan base or even a youth team with just a few cheering parents, this product is providing a win-win solution for everyone. Coaches avoid plugging stats in to a computer after each game, and fans anywhere can keep up with the action.”

GameChanger’s iPhone scoring app, online stat management tools and team organization features are free for coaches and scorekeepers to use. At launch time, the real-time GameStreams are also free for fans to follow, but GameChanger intends to start charging a subscription fee for that content soon. Fungo Media will also provide widgets for local news media sites’ sports pages, offering a new way for publishers to provide up-to-the-minute community sports news.

Sullivan launched Fungo Media in 2009 with business partner and CTO Kiril Savino. The company has raised an initial angel fundraising round through professional investors and a handful of Major League players. These funds are being used to develop GameChanger’s streaming mobile and web technology. Sullivan himself is a former professional player who spent two years in the Cleveland Indians organization, and before business school, co-founded Washington, DC’s largest youth sports camp, Headfirst. Today he coaches his own little league team in downtown Manhattan.
