Johnson's Return Sparks Wizards to Win

July 14, 2007

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Eddie Johnson returned from international tournaments and scored in his third straight MLS game as the Kansas City Wizards beat Real Salt Lake 1-0 on Saturday night to move into second place in the Eastern Conference.

His goal in the 19th minute provided the Wizards with their first victory since he was last in the lineup seven games ago.

Johnson scored back-to-back three-goal hat tricks in his last two games with the Wizards (7-5-4) before joining the U.S. National Team for the Gold Cup and Copa America tournaments.

He scored after Jose Burciaga Jr. sent a diagonal pass 50 yards upfield to the right side. Johnson ran it down, chested it quickly to his feet and ran past Real Salt Lake defender Daniel Torres.

His first shot ricocheted off the right goalpost, but Johnson continued sprinting forward and caught the rebound, knocking it into the net from close range.

It was Johnson's 10th goal of the season.

Real Salt Lake (1-8-6) remained in last place in the West
