PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Junior golfers Lauryn Huske Davies and Patrick Shaw of Topeka will compete in this year’s Optimist International Junior Golf Championships July 21 through 29 at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Huske Davies will compete in the girls 14-15 age division, and Shaw will compete in the boys 16-18 age division.
Hundreds of golfers ages 10 to 18 will travel from throughout the world to play in the annual tournament, now in its 12th year at PGA National. Golfers ages 10 to 15 will play July 21 through 23 in three age divisions each for boys and girls: 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15. The older golfers, ages 16 to 18, will have their turn July 26 through 29. The tournament will showcase some of the most talented young players in the world, many of whom could be the leading collegiate and professional golfers of tomorrow.
The Optimist truly is an international event, with more than 750 players representing 43 states, six Canadian provinces and 39 nations. Past champions of Optimist-sponsored tournaments include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Craig Stadler, Amy Alcott, Brandie Burton, Nick Price and Lorena Ochoa. Other past participants include Nancy Lopez, Davis Love III and Michelle McGann.
The junior golfers’ progress can be tracked online with FootJoy Live!Scoring, which returns to this year’s tournament in cooperation with the Junior Golf Scoreboard. The live scoring system will record players’ scores as they happen, continuously update the leaderboard and provide tee times for the following round after play concludes each day. Viewers can go to www.juniorgolfresults.com and select the tournament’s name or go to www.optimist.org/golf, look under “Junior Golf” and select the tournament name. General photos and news updates about activities on and off the golf course will be updated regularly on the Optimist website throughout the tournament.
