The Kansas women’s basketball team will seek its first win over a ranked opponent this season when it plays host to No. 3/4 Nebraska on Wednesday evening in Allen Fieldhouse. KU, which has won three-straight games, owns a 48-28 advantage over the Cornhuskers in the all-time series and has won two-consecutive games over NU in Lawrence. Nebraska enters Wednesday’s game as one of just two remaining undefeated teams in the NCAA. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

FAST BREAKS

•Kansas picked up its first win over in-state rival Kansas State since Feb. 18, 2007 in its last outing. Behind double figures from freshmen Carolyn Davis and Monica Engelman and senior LaChelda Jacobs, KU managed to defeat the Wildcats, 70-60, in the Jayhawks’ third annual Jayhawks for a Cure “Pink Zone” game. Engelman led KU with 16 points, five assists and four boards, while Davis poured in 14 points, pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and also had a career-best four blocks. Jacobs turned in a season-high 10 points off of 4-of-6 shooting from the field.

•Jayhawk freshman forward Carolyn Davis has recorded double-doubles in two of KU’s last three games. Davis collected 14 points and 10 boards in Kansas’ win over Kansas State on Feb. 7. She also had 10 points and 10 boards in KU’s win over Colorado on Jan. 27. She narrowly missed a third double-double with 20 points and nine boards in a win over Missouri on Jan. 30. Davis is averaging 9.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game in Big 12 play.

•KU freshman guard Monica Engelman poured in a career-best 16 points, while also dishing a career-high five assists, in leading the Jayhawks to their win over Kansas State. Engleman logged a career-best 4o minutes in helping fill the void created when senior All-American Danielle McCray was lost for the season with a knee injury last week.

•Kansas is ranked No. 24 in the latest RPI rankings put out by the NCAA and Collegerpi.com. The Jayhawks are one of seven Big 12 Conference teams to be listed in the Top 25 of the RPI rankings. In addition, they are ranked No. 29 in the RPI by realtimerpi.com.

•Kansas is 11-1 in Allen Fieldhouse on the season, with its only loss coming in a, 70-68, loss in the final seconds at the hands of No. 15 Oklahoma State. The Jayhawks are 3-1 at home during Big 12 play.

•The Jayhawks will dress out 12 players as freshman forward Tania Jackson is taking a redshirt this season and redshirt freshman guard Angel Goodrich and senior guard Danielle McCray will miss the remainder of the 2009-10 season with knee injuries.

A LOOK AT NEBRASKA

The third-ranked Cornhuskers, who are 21-0 on the season and 8-0 in league play, are led by senior All-American candidate Kelsey Griffin who is averaging a team-leading 19.4 points per game which ranks third in the Big 12. The Wooden Award and Senior CLASS Award finalist leads NU in rebounding with 9.9 boards per game, which also is tops the Big 12. Fellow seniors Cory Montgomery (13.0) and Yvonne Turner (12.3) are also scoring in double figures, as is junior Dominique Kelley (12.1). Freshman Lindsey Moore is leading the ‘Huskers in assists with 4.6 an outing, while junior Catheryn Redmon is leading Nebraska in blocks with 2.2 per game and also in field goal percentage at 63.9 percent. NU is coached by Connie Yori who owns a 276-156 record in her eighth season at the helm of the program. Yori’s overall coaching record is 337-237 in her 20th season.
