KANSAS CITY, MO (June 28, 2007) – The Royals have announced the signings of their second, third and fifth round selections from the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. Kansas City has now inked 17 of its top 20 selections from the draft and 29 overall. The Royals have also signed five additional non-drafted free agents in addition to the 23 that were previously announced on June 13.
Second round selection Sam Runion, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-handed pitcher from AC Reynolds High School in Asheville, N.C., went 5-2 his senior season with a 2.14 ERA and 85 strikeouts. He pitched in the 2006 Alflac All-American Baseball Classic last summer and was assigned to the Royals rookie squad in Surprise, Ariz.
Third round pick Danny Duffy is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound left hander from Cabrillo High School in Lompoc, Calif. Assigned to the Royals Arizona League squad, Duffy posted a 0.60 ERA his senior season, allowing 28 hits and striking out 127 in 58.2 innings.
Outfielder Adrian Ortiz was the Royals fifth round selection. The 6-foot, 182-pound speedster attended Pepperdine University and was a three-year starter for the Waves, named All-West Coast Conference in 2007. A resident of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, he hit .342 in 2007, leading the team with 51 runs scored while swiping 16 bases in 17 attempts. The left-handed hitter and right-handed thrower made his professional debut for the Royals rookie league squad in Idaho Falls on June 26 and is 5-for-9 with a double in two games.
