The Topeka Shawnee County Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies took place Wednesday Night at the Ramada Inn Downtown. Three local heroes were inducted into the hall including former Topeka High Basketball Coach Willie Nicklin, former Shawnee Heights football stand-out Tom Dinkel, and former Topeka High track and basketball star Preston Carrington. Nicklin earned 501 wins throughout his coaching career while Dinkel played football for the Kansas Jayhawks and was drafted in the 5th round by the Cincinnati Bengals. Carrington played basketball and was a part of the track and field sqaud at Wichita State. Carrington also earned 5th place in the long jump in the Munich Olympic Games.
The Topeka Shawnee County Sports Council also held its high school sports awards banquet. Seaman's Cross Country star Sydney Messick took female athlete of the year award, while Shawnee Heights thrower Iain Trimble, who threw the javelin for a high school national record this year, took the crown on the boy's side.
