KU's Scott Sets Pole Vault Record

University of Kansas freshman Jordan Scott set a new meet record to win the men's pole vault at the 2007 Finish Line USA Junior Championships. Scott, the reigning Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor champion, cleared 18-01.25 (5.52m) to capture the event title.

Scott cleared the bar on his first attempt, which was his second vault of the 2007 season over 18 feet. His mark eclipsed the previous record of 5.51m/18-1 set by Lawrence Johnson in 1993. Scott won the event outright when he cleared 5.25 meters on his third attempt, defeating Washington freshman and 2006 U.S. Junior champion Scott Roth.

The title continues an illustrious year for Scott, who became the first Jayhawk to win a men's Big 12 pole vault title. He will also compete in the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday night at 5:45 p.m. CST.

Scott captured the Big 12 Indoor crown with a vault of 17-05 and was named Big 12 Indoor Freshman Performer of the Year. During the outdoor season, Scott claimed the Big 12 title by clearing 18-02.50 and was named Big 12 Outdoor Freshman Co-Performer of the Year. Scott also captured the Midwest Regional crown with a vault of 17-05.

Scott became only the second Big 12 student-athlete to win both the indoor and outdoor conference pole vault titles in the same year. Texas' Jacob Davis swept the events in 1997. He also is only the second Big 12 student-athlete to win both the indoor and outdoor conference pole vault titles in the same year. Texas' Jacob Davis swept the events in 1997 and Scott is the first KU freshman to receive Indoor Outstanding Freshman of the Year since the formation of the Big 12 Conference.

In other action from Thursday, junior Crystal Manning finished 12th in the triple jump at the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The 2007 Big 12 Outdoor champion and All-American leapt 43-01.75 (13.15m). Fellow rookie pole vaulter Kirk Cooper tied for sixth place with a vault of 15-11 (4.85m) at the 2007 Finish Line USA Junior Championships.
