KU's Ashwood Signs With Cubs

LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Kansas junior Zach Ashwood has signed with the Chicago Cubs organization. The 6-foot-4 left-handed pitcher was selected by the Cubs in the 16th round (487 overall) of this season’s first-year player draft.

Ashwood will begin his professional career with the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League. Boise is the Class-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.

The 6-foot-4 lefty went 4-4 for Kansas during the 2007 season, making 12 starts and appearing in 16 games. The Colony, Texas, native posted a 5.77 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 64 innings. Ashwood spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career at TCU.

Ashwood becomes the second Kansas player to sign a professional contract after the draft. Former KU center fielder Kyle Murphy inked a deal with the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.
