Wichita State is a longtime college baseball power and U-C-Irvine a relative newcomer to the nation's elite programs.
But when they meet this weekend in the N-C-double-A super
regional, it will be the first time either has gotten that far.
Wichita State won the College World Series in 1989 and finished
second three times. But the Shockers have not been back to Omaha,
Nebraska, since 1996. That's three years before the N-C-double-A
instituted the best-of-three super regional series.
The Shockers advanced to the super regional by winning their
home regional last week. UC-Irvine is making its third N-C-double-A tournament appearance to Wichita State's 25.
The Anteaters swept unbeaten through the Round Rock Regional.
