Women's Basketball Attendance 2nd in MIAA

For immediate release, June 6, 2007

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association finished second in Division II women's basketball attendance for the 2006-07 season, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced last week.

The average of 1,371 fans was down 7.1 percent from last season's Division II-best of 1,468 by the MIAA. The mark is an increase of 8.9 percent from the 2004-05 season -- the last time the conference had 10 member institutions.

The seven-team North Central Conference regained the NCAA Division II attendance title with an average of 1,466. The MIAA snapped the NCC's run of 15 consecutive attendance crowns last season.

Once again, the MIAA had better average attendance than all but eight NCAA Division I conferences.

MIAA schools drew 192,008 fans for 140 home games last season -- the only Division II conference with an attendance figure above 150,000. Only 10 Division I conferences had better total attendance than the MIAA.

Washburn repeated as the institutional leader in Division II attendance with an average of 2,563 -- 35,875 fans in 14 home dates. Rival Emporia State was right behind WU with an average of 2,421 for 14 home dates to place second in D-II.

"The great fan support of both Washburn and Emporia State was one of the many reasons their game was selected for broadcast on CSTV (College Sports Television) last season," Commissioner Ralph McFillen said. "Those fans helped show the nation what we've always known -- MIAA women's basketball fans are the best in Division II."

Missouri Western was right in the mix with an average of 2,175 for 16 games to place fourth, while Central Missouri's mark of 1,615 over 12 games ranked it 10th.

For the second time in as many seasons, WU (47th) and ESU (49th) each ranked in the top 50 for all NCAA women's basketball teams, giving the state of Kansas five schools on that list -- Kansas State was 29th (4,063), Kansas was 43rd (2,657) and Wichita State was 45th (2,606).
