MIAA second in NCAA-II men's hoop attendance for ‘06-07

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association ended up second in Division II men's basketball attendance average for the 2006-07 season, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced last week.

The MIAA drew 268,946 fans to its 10 institutions' 142 home games last season for an average of 1,894 fans per game. The average trails only the seven-team North Central Conference's average of 1,948.

That's an increase of 1.9 percent from last season's nine-team, 125-game average (1,858) and it is up 6.5 percent from the 2004-05 average (1,779) -- the last season the conference had a 10-school lineup. The conference drew 19,883 more fans this past season than in 2004-05.

Only three conferences -- the MIAA, the 14-team Great Lakes Valley Conference (205,095) and the nine-team Northern Sun Conference (201,880) cracked 200,000 in total attendance last season.

Leading the MIAA and NCAA Division II was Elite Eight semifinalist Central Missouri. The Mules drew 65,520 fans in 18 home games in 2006-07 -- an average of 3,640 fans. That's a 38.9-percent increase from last season's average of 2,621.

Five other MIAA schools were ranked in the top 30, with two of them joining UCM in the top 15.

Washburn placed seventh with an 11-game average of 2,652, while Emporia State was 13th with a 2,194 average for 17 games.

Missouri Western came in 18th with a mark of 1,990 per game for 13 home dates, while Fort Hays State was 23rd at 1,858 for 14 games. Pittsburg State staked out 26th place with 1,505 fans per game for 13 home dates.

"The support of our communities throughout the MIAA is very appreciated," Commissioner Ralph McFillen said. "They realize the high-quality of play in the conference is worth the effort to come out and watch."

The MIAA had better average attendance figures than seven Division I conferences and better total attendance than 10 conferences at that level.
