WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Derek Schermerhorn drove in the winning run
with two outs in the ninth inning to give top-seeded Wichita State
a 4-to-3 victory over Arizona tonight.
The Shockers' win means the two teams will play again tomorrow
in the regional championship game, with a berth in the Super
Regional at stake.
Arizona (42-16) came back twice to tie the game -- once in the
top of the fifth and again in the top of the seventh. But Wichita
State (52-20) responded each time.
Shockers pinch hitter Bret Bascue drew a four-pitch walk to
start the ninth, then pinch runner Ryan Jones advanced to second on
a sacrifice bunt. After another out, Schermerhorn drove the ball to
the gap in left center to score Jones from second.
The Shockers have not advanced past a regional since 1996.
