Ichabods Record Low Team Score in Third Round at Golf Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Washburn Ichabod golf recorded the lowest team
score of any of the 20 teams in the third round of the 45th annual the
Meadows Golf Club in Allendale, Mich., and moved into fifth place with
the final round set to take place Friday. The Ichabods carded a team
score of 14-over putting themselves 10 shots out of first place behind
Barry University.

The Ichabods are two shots behind South Carolina Upstate for fourth
place, four strokes behind Florida Southern for third place and eight
stroke behind Columbus State for second place.

Washburn’s Taylor Dunham, Matt Ewald and Matt Lazzo all recorded 3-
over 74s to pace the Ichabods. The fourth score counted for the
Ichabods was John Robbins’ 5-over 76. Ryan Deutsch shot a 10-over 81.

Dunham was 4-over on the backside as the Ichabods started on the 10th
hole for the second straight round. He recorded a double bogey on the
12th hole and bogies on the 17th and 18th holes. Dunham opened the
backside with a birdie to move to 3-over, but a bogey on the 2nd hole
pushed him back to 4-over for his third round. But he came back to
birdie the par 5 4th hole to get back to 3-over and finished out the
round with five straight pars. Dunham climbed 28 places in the
individual standings from 78th to 51st entering the final round.

Matt Ewald finished with a 3-over 74 for his third round. Ewald was 3-
over at the turn after suffering a bogey at the 14th hole and back-to-
back bogies at the 17th and 18th holes. He made the turn at 3-over and
got to 2-over with a birdie at the fourth hole before wrapping up his
round with a birdie on the ninth hole. Ewald is in a tie for 41st
after beginning the third round in a tie for 63rd place.

John Robbins played his front nine even par 35 placing and finished
his round with a 41 on the backside placing him in a tie for seventh
overall for the tournament. He bogied the 12th hole but came back to
par with a birdie on the par 4 16th hole. On the backside, Robbins was
5-over after closing with a double bogey and back-to-back bogies on
the final three holes.

Matt Lazzo is in a tie for 28th place overall after recording his 3-
over 74 to move to 14-over for the championship. Lazzo was 1-over
after his first nine holes rallying after recording a bogey on his
opening hole and another on the 13th hole. Lazzo got back to 1-over
with a birdie on No. 15. on the backside, Lazzo bogied Nos. 1 and 3
before recording a birdie on No. 4 to get back to 2-over for his round
before taking a bogey on the eighth hole finishing 2-over for the
backside.

Ryan Deutsch is in a tie for 62nd overall after carding a 10-over 81.
He was 1-over at the turn, but took a triple bogey on hole No. 1 and
then bogied six of his final eight holes to finish his round.

The Ichabods were in a tie for sixth place after three rounds during
the 2005 championships when the finished a school-best 10th overall.

Notes:
* The only MIAA team to win the men’s NCAA Division II Championship
was the 1963 team from Southwest Missouri State.
* The highest Washburn individual finish was Matt Warnock when he
finished 12th during the 2004 tournament.
* The highest non-winning finish by an MIAA team was in 1964 when
Southwest Missouri finished in fourth. The top finishes by other
schools competing as MIAA schools are:
**Central Missouri finished 10th in 1994
**Missouri-Rolla finished 12th in 1969
**Missouri-St. Louis finished 12th in 2001
**Missouri Western finished 15th in 1997
**Truman finished 10th in 1964
**Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State) finished first in 1963
and fourth in 1964.
