Hornet softball wins over host Minnesota-Mankato

MANKATO, MN May 12, 2007-- The Hornet softball team got a victory over host Minnesota-Mankato in the North Central Regional Tournament in Mankato, Minnesota. The two teams were deadlocked through four and half when the Hornets broke out for six runs in the fifth and sixth inning. The first run came on a RBI single by Laura Pfaustch in the bottom of the fifth inning after Morgan Viola singled off the third baseman's glove and Courtney Stevens sacrificed her to second. Chelsea McClernon followed that up with a long two-run home run to left field to help the Hornets build a 3-0 lead. The Hornets got the rest of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Megan Davison led off with a base hit, Dace singled up the middle as Morgan Viola singled to drive in Davison. Courtney Stevens then got an RBI as she grounded out to first base driving in Dace. The final came on Laura Pfautsch shot to third that was misplayed by the Maverick third baseman. Samantha Sheeley pitched all seven innings only giving up three hits and striking out 11 in the game. The Hornets will now advance to take on Southwest Minnesota State in the elimination bracket championship at 1 p.m. in the Caswell Sports Complex in Mankato, Minnesota.
