HORNETS ADVANCE IN MIAA BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
May 11, 2007—Mark McBratney’s two out, two RBI double in the bottom of the eighth gave Emporia State a 9-7 win over Northwest Missouri in the first round of the MIAA Baseball Tournament in Warrensburg, Mo. on
Friday afternoon. With the win ESU moves to tomorrow’s winner’s bracket championship game against the winner of the Central Missouri and Ft. Hays State contest.
Northwest Missouri scored single runs in the second and third to take a
2-0 lead into the bottom of the third. The Hornets took the lead with
five runs in the third inning thanks to a pair of two run doubles by
Keith Hernandez and Billy Sharp.
The Bearcats tied the score at 5-5 with three runs, two of which were
unearned, in the top of the fourth. Matt Marasco and Nick Wolfe each
homered in the fifth to give ESU a 7-5 lead. Northwest scored two in the
top of the seventh and had a runner on first when Brock Nehls relieved
starter Trent Lare for the Hornets. Nehls then picked off the Bearcats
Ryley Westman and struck out Britt Westman to end the inning.
Andy Anderson led off the bottom of the eighth and Tim Barger reached on
a bunt single past the pitcher to put runners at first and second.
Conner Crumbliss sacrificed the runners over and Brian Majors struck out
before McBratney doubled in the two runs for the win.
Nehls pitched the final 2.2 innings with four strikeouts to pick up his
sixth win of the year. Barger was four for four at the plate to raise
his average 17 points to .284 on the season. Keith Hernandez, the MIAA
leader in RBI, had two more to give him 71 on the season.
The Hornets will play the winner of tonight’s UCM-FHSU game on Saturday
at 3:30 p.m. at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field. The winner of the MIAA
Tournament will get the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Central
