ESU Catcher Earns Academic Honor

May 10, 2007--Emporia State catcher Courtney Stevens has been named a
first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District performer and is now
eligible to earn Academic All-America status. Shortstop April
Huddleston made the second-team Academic All-District.
Stevens has a 3.98 GPA in business and Spanish and is ranked eighth in
the MIAA in doubles per game. She holds the MIAA career record for
fielding percentage at .995 and is within 46 putouts of the MIAA career
record. She has earned Academic All-MIAA honors and is a member of the
MIAA Commissioner*s Academic Honor Roll and the ESU Athletic
Director*s Honor Roll.
Huddleston has a 3.98 GPA in education and is fifth in the MIAA in on
base percentage.
The Hornets had a team GPA of 3.55 last semester to lead all ESU
athletic teams. According to the NFCA, the Hornets were second in the
nation in team GPA last season with a 3.54 team GPA. Last year Bree
Beattie and Melissa Stevens earned Academic All-America honors for the
Hornet softball program. As a department ESU is ranked ninth among NCAA
Division II schools at producing Academic All-Americans in the 21st
century.
The Hornets, who moved up to #9 in this week*s NFCA Top 25, open the
NCAA Division II North Central Regional this afternoon against Central
Missouri in North Mankato, Minn. The game will be available on the
radio in the Emporia area on KFFX, 104.9-FM and on the internet at
