JOPLIN, Mo. – Washburn won their fifth straight tournament after carding a team score of a 9-over 297 claiming the NCAA Division II Central Regional to advance to their fourth NCAA National Tournament in the last five years with a 15-stroke victory over host school Missouri Southern at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club in Joplin, Mo. The Ichabods also reached the national tournament after the 2003, 2004 and 2005 seasons.
Ryan Deutsch was medalist honors with a 3-under 213 for the three-day tournament after shooting a 1-over 73 for the third round. He followed a pair of 70s in the first two rounds with his 73 today.
Matt Lazzo finished in second place with a 3-over 219 (74-73-72). Lazzo was 2-over at the turn, but rallied back to the clubhouse with a 2-under 34 on the backside en route to the even 72.
Matt Ewald was 7-over with a 223. After shooting a pair of 73s in the first two rounds, Ewald carded a 77 in the third round to finish in a tie for eighth place.
John Robbins tied for 18th with a 12-over 228 (77-73-78). He was 6-over in the third round.
Taylor Dunham recorded his best round of the regional with a 3-over 75 improving on a pair of 78s in the first two rounds for a 15-over 231.
The Ichabods will now advance to the national finals May 22-25 at The Meadows in Allendale, Michigan. The finals will be hosted by Grand Valley State University.
Missouri Southern finished with a three-day total of 31-over (895) and Central Missouri was 35-over (899). Last season’s Central Regional winner, Winona State finished in fourth place with a score of 37-over (901).
