ALTAMONTE, SPRINGS, FLA. -- The No. 26 Washburn Ichabod tennis season
came to an end in the sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament with a 5-1 loss to
No. 21 ranked Hawaii Pacific. The two-time MIAA Champion Ichabods finish
the season with a 18-3 record.
The Ichabods trailed 2-1 after doubles action as Brad Johnston and
Nathan Martin took our Anton Samuilau and Frank Godinett at No. 2
doubles 8-5. At No. 1 doubles, Rutger Vliegenberg and Andrew Plum
battled back from a 6-1 deficit, but fell 8-5. Drew Hanson and Ryan Ward
fell 9-8 losing 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
In singles' play, Ryan Ward fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 to Daniel Llarenas.
For Washburn at No. 5 singles, Brad Johnston was topped 6-2, 6-1 by Jan
Hroch and Hawaii Pacific's Anton Samuilau wrapped up the match for the
Sea Warriors beating Drew Hanson 6-2, 6-2.
Rutger Vliegenberg won his first set in a tie breaker over Hendrik Bode
7-6. At No. 3 singles, Washburn's Nathan Martin was trailing Peter Raben
6-2, 4-3 in the second set and Frank Godinet from Hawaii Pacific was
leading Andrew Plum 6-1, 3-2 in the second set at No. 6 singles when the
match was wrapped up for the Sea Warriors.
