TOPEKA, Kan. – The Lady Blues fought back from a 2-1 deficit after
doubles play to take the lead early in singles play but Northwest
Missouri State won at the final three spots to clinch the match in the
final of the NCAA North Central Region pod Friday. Washburn ended its
season at 20-2 while the Bearcats (15-7) will move on to the round of 16
against Hawaii Pacific on May 9.
Diana Goldsmith and Julie Huyberechts won at No. 1 singles 8-1 against
Lisa Pendrak and Carolina Amaral to get the first point. The Bearcats
then took the next two points when Jordan Lipira and Veronica Castillo
won 8-6 at No. 2 against Lauren Harris and Amber Raindl and at No. 3
Lina Gomez and Emily Lindsay beat Lisa Coleman and Audrie Miller 9-8.
The Lady Blues then quickly went ahead 3-2 in team points when Goldsmith
and Huyberechts won easily. Goldsmith topped Lindsay 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1
and Huyberechts beat Amaral 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2.
The Bearcats erased that lead and clinched the win with victories in the
final three spots. Castillo won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 against Miller, Lipira
won 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 against Harris and Pendrak won 7-5, 3-6, 6-2
at the No. 6 spot over Allie Gardner.
The No. 3 match between WU’s Raindl and NWMSU’s Gomez was unfinished.
