TOPEKA, Kan. – The Lady Blues swept doubles play and then won a pair of singles matches to clinch a 5-0 win over Winona State in the first round of the NCAA Central Region tournament. Washburn (20-1) will now host Northwest Missouri State Friday at noon for a chance to advance to the national tournament.
Lisa Coleman and Audrie Miller finished their doubles match to secure WU’s first point with an 8-2 win over Holly Peitier and Courtney Zinter in No. 3 doubles. The No. 2 team of Amber Raindl and Lauren Harris then won 8-3 over Maggie Lindquist and Laura Hobert and No. 1 players Diana Goldsmith and Julie Huyberechts wrapped up the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win against Michelle Bailey and Mary Hesterman.
In singles the Lady Blues put away WSU quickly when Huyberecths won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 against Hobert and then Raindl clinched the dual with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lindquist at No. 3.
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods topped arch-rival Emporia State 5-1 in the first round of the NCAA North Central Regional Pod held at the Wood Valley Tennis Center. The Ichabods will face the Metro State Roadrunners at 9 a.m., currently scheduled to be played at the Washburn Tennis Courts, but could be moved back inside in the event of rain. Washburn improves to 17-2 overall while Emporia State finishes the season at 11-7.
The Ichabods led 2-1 after doubles action as the WU duo of Nathan Martin and Brad Johnston topped Kevin Schoon and Ross Hougland 8-3. Washburn picked up their next point and Drew Hanson and Ryan Ward beat Kevin Arnhold and Branden Ewertz at No. 3 doubles 8-5. ESU would pick up their lone point of the match at No. 1 doubles as Julian Rios and Nathan Mai held off Rutger Vliegenberg and Andrew Plum 9-8, taking the tiebreaker 7-5.
In singles' play, Andrew Plum put Washburn up 3-1 with his 6-0, 6-1 win over Braden Ewertz and Rutger Vliegenberg, the No. 28th ranked player in the nation, topped Julian Rios 6-1, 6-3. Nathan Martin wrapped up the match for the Ichabods topping Kevin Schoon 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
