April 28, 2007-- The Hornet baseball team swept Washburn 7-1 and 6-1 on day one of a four game series. In game one Trent Lare went six innings and only gave up one run and Landon West came on to strike out two and close out the seventh. The Hornets got a two run home run from Brian Majors, his first of the season, and another home run from Mark McBratney. In game two pitcher Brock Nehls went all nine innings scattering eight hits and only giving up one run to pick up his fifth victory of the season. Keith Hernandez hit his ninth home run of the year and Nick Wolfe went two for four with three RBI and his third home run. The Hornets will travel up the Turnpike to take on Washburn in a double header tommorow with first pitch set for 12 noon at Falley Field in Topeka.
April 28, 2007--In their final regular season home games, seniors scored five of six runs on the day as the #6 Hornet softball team swept Ft. Hays State 3-1, and 3-0 on Saturday at Turnbull Field.
Senior Courtney Reed gave up one run on two hits in the opener with nine strikeouts in seven innings. Senior Morgan Viola put ESU on the board in the fifth inning on a lead-off home run. Seniors Courtney Stevens and Chelsea McClernon then reached on errors and Stevens scored the game winning run on junior April Huddleston's double. Reed struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.
Senior Laura Pfautsch was two for three and scored the game winning run in the nightcap. Samantha Sheeley threw a three hit shutout with ten strike outs in game two.
The Hornets maintained their hold on first place in the MIAA with two games remaining at Missouri Western. First pitch from St. Joseph on Wednesday is set for 11 a.m.
