LAWRENCE, Kan. - Senior Kassie Humphreys threw a two-hitter and Kansas capitalized off of two Oklahoma errors to defeat the No. 3 Sooners, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark. The Jayhawks (32-18-1, 7-8 Big 12) extended their win streak to five games while knocking off their highest ranked opponent since April 23, 2006 when they defeated No. 2 Texas.
Humphreys (18-10) struck out six and walked none in the complete-game shutout. She held Oklahoma to two hits, its fewest in Big 12 play this season.
At the plate, sophomore Dougie McCaulley went 2-for-3 to lead KU while senior Nicole Washburn, freshman Amanda Jobe, and sophomore Elle Pottorf each added a hit in the victory.
Kansas scored two runs in the bottom of the third off of two Sooner errors and three Jayhawk hits. Sophomore Val Chapple reached on an error by the second basemen to lead off the inning and moved to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by freshman Ally Stanton. McCaulley singled to second and Chapple was able to score on an overthrow to home by the second baseman. Washburn singled, McCaulley advanced to third and Jobe knocked an RBI single down the right field line to score McCaulley and give the Jayhawks a 2-0 lead.
The Kansas defense, led by Chapple at third base, was flawless, making difficult plays look routine. It was the Jayhawks' first shutout victory since defeating No. 11 Texas 2-0 on April 8.
Susan Ogden and Savannah Long tallied hits for the Sooners (48-6, 13-4 Big 12). Junior ace Lauren Eckermann (30-3) struck out 10 Jayhawks, allowed five hits, walked two and gave up zero earned runs in six innings to take the loss.
OU and KU wrap up the weekend series Sunday at 1 p.m. Kansas will honor seniors Humphreys and Washburn in their final home game with a special pre-game ceremony. Sunday will also be "Grow Your Own Bat" day. In recognition of Arbor Day (April 27) fans will receive a free tree upon exit. These ready-to-plant Green Ash seedlings will be available while supplies last.
The team will close out the 2007 season at Arrocha Ballpark with a free youth clinic following Sunday's game. Youth ages 12 and under are invited to participate.
