Weekly Notes
Baseball
The baseball team will look to even its season series with Border Showdown rival Missouri Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium, before traveling to Oklahoma for a weekend set in Norman. The Jayhawks avoided a sweep at Texas Tech over the weekend, pounding out eight runs and 13 hits in an 8-1 triumph Sunday. Junior John Allman led the way, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while senior Kyle Murphy collected three hits and scored twice. Freshman Wally Marciel earned his fourth victory of the season, and first in the conference, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing just one earned run.

Men's Golf
The men's golf team travels to Hutchinson, Kan. and Prairie Dunes Golf Club to compete in the 2007 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship this week. The Jayhawks will try to build on an impressive regular season which included three team victories. The Jayhawks, who have been seeded number six in the tournament, will try to win their second Big 12 Championship, the first of which came at Prairie Dunes in 1999. Kansas will be led by senior Gary Woodland, who will try to build off last year's seventh place finish at the Big 12 Championship. Fellow senior Tyler Docking will once again team with Woodland to create a dangerous one-two punch for the Jayhawks. Senior Barrett Martens, junior Joey Mundy, and sophomore Walt Koelbel will all be making their first career appearances at the conference meet. The tournament consists of 36 holes being completed April 23rd, followed by the final round being conducted on Tuesday, April 24th. Check kuathletics.com for complete results.

Rowing
KU failed to record a victory against one of the fastest crews in the county, No. 8 Minnesota, on Saturday morning, April 21. Windy conditions did not help the Jayhawks as they suffered their first sweep of the season. KU will now look to regroup for the Big 12 Invitational on Sunday, April 29 against Texas and Kansas State in Kansas City.

Softball
Kansas earned their second conference sweep of the season with a 5-3 victory over Texas Tech Sunday. The Kansas offense exploded for five runs behind two home runs from freshman Sara Ramirez and two RBIs from sophomore Elle Pottorf. Kansas won the first game of the series, 4-1, behind senior pitcher Kassie Humphreys' one-hitter. KU now owns a nine-game winning streak over the Red Raiders. Up next for Kansas is a mid-week road trip to Nebraska to face the Cornhuskers on Wednesday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. On the following day, KU will play a doubleheader with Missouri Valley Conference foe, Creighton. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Omaha, Neb. The Jayhawks then return to Lawrence for their final homestand of the season when they host Oklahoma April 28-29. The weekend series games are slated for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

Tennis
KU closed its regular season on Sunday with a 7-0 loss to No. 21 Texas A&M. Kansas finishes the spring with a record of 4-16, including a 2-9 mark in conference play. Kansas' only win over A&M was from the tandem of junior Lauren Hommell and freshman Kunigunda Dorn, who defeated the Aggies' 39th ranked duo of Lubinsky and Mechem. The Jayhawks will open up play in the Big 12 Championship on Thursday at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo., where they will be the No. 11 seed.

Track & Field
The Kansas track and field teams registered 17 regional qualifying marks at the 80th Kansas Relays. Highlighting the festivities were fantastic performances by a pair of KU sophomores: Sha'Ray Butler and Victoria Howard. Butler won the women's 400-meter hurdles in a career-best time of 59.54 seconds, good for a regional mark. Howard raced to victory in the women's 100-meter dash, clocking in at a regionally qualifying mark of 11.58 seconds. Also competing well in track events was junior Colby Wissel, who placed second in the men's 1500-meter run in a regional mark of 3:47.08 and junior Julius Jiles who set a new personal record in the men's 110-meter hurdles in 13.89 seconds. In field events, junior Egor Agafonov won his third-straight hammer throw competition, throwing a season best 227-05.50 while sophomore Zlata Tarasova won the women's hammer with a season-best throw of 202-5.50. Junior Ashley Brown missed a pair of KU records in the women's 100 and 400-meter hurdles, posting season-best times of 13.33 and 58.48 seconds, respectively.

Women's Golf
On Wednesday, April 18, Amanda Costner became the first Jayhawk to win a Big 12 Women's Golf Individual Championship. Costner led the field throughout the three-day tournament in Waco, Texas, and finished with a final score of 221 (71-73-77--221). As a team, Kansas finished in ninth with a three-day total of 945 at the Ridgewood Country Club.
