WICHITA, Kan.- In front of a season-high 5,781 fans, No. 10 Wichita State (31-9) edged Kansas (19-23), 2-1, Wednesday night at Eck Stadium.
Conor Gillaspie went 2-for-4 on the night, to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. With the score knotted at one, Andy Dirks drew a lead-off walk and continued to second with a stolen base. Gillaspie then shot one up the middle, tipping the second baseman’s glove after sending him diving to the turf on the RBI single.
Wichita State’s freshman starter, Tyson Fugett, threw a scoreless three innings and held Kansas to one hit, while walking two and striking out two. Jared Simon struck out two of the five batters he faced, but gave up a lead-off double to Brock Simpson to start the top of the fifth before being relieved by Anthony Capra.
Capra started a little shaky as Simpson stole third and scored on a wild pitch to give the Jayhawks a 1-0 lead. The sophomore lefty struck out Ross Kelling but walked the next batter. Capra then took control, forcing two ground outs to end the inning and striking out the side in the sixth. The Arvada, Colo. native stayed solid in the seventh, retiring Kansas in order with two strikeouts and a ground out.
The Shockers evened the score in the bottom of the seventh, 1-1. Danny Jackson led off with a single pushed through the left side and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Workman. Tyler Hill, in his first appearance at the plate, singled to shallow right-center field to drive in Jackson.
Noah Booth closed the final two innings, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out three to pick up his sixth win of the season. Kansas closer Paul Smyth (3-3) was tagged with the loss in 1.1 innings of work.
Wichita State travels to Missouri State this weekend for a three-game conference series. Friday’s game starts at 7 p.m. Saturday’s game will be broadcast on Channel Now 22 at 2 p.m. The series wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m.
