LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas basketball coach Bill Self said
Lawrence needs to improve its recreational facilities.
The coach said he hasn't decided whether to support a proposed
sales tax increase to pay for them.
Self was one of 25 people who attended a meeting yesterday
evening of Partners for Lawrence Athletics and Youth, which is
promoting the upgrading of the city's facilities.
He said the recreational facilities available in Lawrence were
not of the same caliber of several other communities.
Self says the lack of good facilities stunts the city's growth
because good recreation opportunities attract people to cities.
Mayor Sue Hack has proposed creating a one-cent citywide sales
tax to pay for recreation facilities, a library, economic
development initiatives and infrastructure projects.
