Walton plates six runs as Ichabods split with Griffons

Tommy Mangino hit a pair of home runs and Zach Walton hit a three-run shot in the second game as the Ichabods split a doubleheader with Missouri Western Sunday at Falley Field. Washburn moved to 14-17 overall and 8-10 in the MIAA while MWSU went to 16-18 and 9-11. The two teams will wrap up the series Monday with a doubleheader at 3 p.m.

Game 1
The Ichabods loaded the bases in the first inning but scored just one on the way to a 7-3 loss in the opener.

Wes Joy singled and then was moved to third on a double from Tommy Mangino. He scored when Zach Walton singled to left. Randy Wild was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out but the Bods grounded into a double play to end the first inning.

The Griffons tied the game in the second off a double and then a pair of sacrifices and then they broke the game open in the third with five runs off seven hits. Washburn starter Bryan Stroth was chased from the game as he suffered the loss and dropped his record to 3-2.

Mangino homered in the sixth and then the Ichabods got one more in the seventh when Calvin Iversen grounded in Dan Egan.

MWSU starter A.J. Huttenlocker went the distance, allowing three runs off eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Sam Keim and Drew Tucker combined for 4 1/3 innings of relief for WU and allowed just a run off three hits.

Game 2
Walton's three-run homer to left centerfield capped a four-run third inning and the Ichabods held on for an 8-7 win to break a three-game losing streak.

Mangino homered in the bottom of the first, his second of the night and in as many at-bats. In the third Iversen reached on a fielder's choice and then moved to third when Peter singled. Joy then reached on an error that scored Iversen. That set the plate for Walton's three-run homer, his team-leading fourth.

Washburn got two more in the fifth to go up 7-3 when Peter and Joy started the inning with singles and then Walton later drove in his fourth and fifth RBI of the game with a double.

WU starter Jeff LaCerte earned his first win by going six innings and allowing three runs off six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Steve Kinderknecht pitched two innings of relief and then Jake Iverson, after allowing a pair of runs in the ninth, recorded his first save.

Walton ended the day 3 for 6 with six RBI while Kyle Peter was 4 for 9.
