April 13, 2007--In a finish befitting Friday the 13th, the Papa John's D-II Challenge decathlon wrapped up in cold and wet conditions in Manhattan, Kan. on Friday night. Emporia State's Cameron Babb placed third behind NCAA provisional qualifiers Alan Yoder of Ft. Hays State and Zac Preble of Bemidji State in the two day, two city event that started in Emporia.
Babb, the day one leader, won the javelin in Manhattan on day two but could not overcome a poor showing in the discus earlier in the day in Emporia. He finished with 6,287 points.
The decathlon counts as the first event of the Papa John's D-II Challenge and heading into Sunday's competition Ft. Hays State and Bemidji State are tied with 10 points each. Emporia State is in third place with six points and Grand Valley State is in fourth with five points. The Beavers and Lakers, however do not have anyone elsae entered in the meet.
The main portion of the D-II Challenge will begin on Sunday at 12 noon at ESU's Welch Stadium/Witten Track.
