MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head women’s basketball coach Deb Patterson announced today that Kelsey Nelson (Riley, Kan./Cloud County CC/Riley County HS) has signed national letter of intent to attend K-State and play for the Wildcats next season.
Nelson joins Jackie Stanley (Wylie, Texas/Wylie HS), Shalin Spani (Lee’s Summit, Mo./Metro Academy) and Kelsey Hill (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) as Kansas State’s recruiting class for the 2007-08 season.
“Kelsey is a student athlete of outstanding character,” said Patterson. “She brings an intensity and work ethic to the floor that elevates the play of those around her. We look for her to be a versatile guard that can stretch the defense with her three-point shot. We are particularly impressed with the combination of Kelsey's scoring efficiency (field goal percentages from the floor) and her rebounding numbers as a perimeter player.”
Nelson, a 5-foot-9 guard, averaged 18.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.6 steals while shooting 49 percent from the floor and 48 percent from the three-point range this past season at Cloud County Community College. She also earned First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Region VI.
A four-year starter at Riley County High School, Nelson is the all-time leading scorer with 1,663 points. She also holds the records for free-throws (374) and free-throw percentage (.740). Nelson was named First Team All-State her senior year after averaging 19.5 points while shooting 57 percent from the floor.
Kelsey, the younger sister of Wildcats’ senior wide receiver Jordy Nelson, is planning to major in Elementary Education at Kansas State.
