ESU Signs Onaga, Cloud County Product

April 11, 2007--Emporia State University women*s basketball coach
Brandon Schneider has the signing of Becky Zavel to attend Emporia State
and play basketball for the Lady Hornets. She joins the early signing
class of Bree Kisner, Brittney Miller, Allie Renberg, Alli Volkens and
Jessen Tucker in the Lady Hornets 2007-08 recruiting class. Those six
will join Ida Edwards, a transfer from Pensacola Junior College, who has
been attending ESU since the semester break.
Zabel, a 5-10 forward originally from Onaga, Kan., will transfer to ESU
from Cloud County CC. She averaged 8.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists
and 1.9 steals per game and shot .526 from the field for the T-Birds
last season. She is ranked in the top 20 all-time at Cloud County CC in
assists and rebounds. Zabel was a first-team All-Class 2A performer for
Onaga HS in 2005. She averaged 17.7 points and 11.2 rebounds per game
for the Buffaloes. A three-sport performer at OHS, she was second in
the state in the javelin and third in the state in the triple jump as a
senior as well as earning All-Twin Valley League honors in volleyball.

A secondary math education major, Zabel was a member of the All-Kansas
Academic Team at CCCC and earned KBCA Academic All-State honors at OHS.

The Lady Hornets were 22-8 last season and ended the season ranked #18
in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA National Poll. ESU will lose six players to
graduation, but return two-time All-American Michelle Stueve and 2007
MIAA Freshman of the Year Cassondra Boston.
