KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Temperatures are expected to reach 80 degrees in Kansas City today, great weather for the Royals opener against the Boston Red Sox at Kauffman Stadium.
Team officials, players and fans are optimistic for a season that will end with a better record than the 100-loss campaigns in four of the last five years. Opening day tickets sold out in less than an hour, faster than ever before.
Both teams will have high-profile additions to their teams on the mound for the 3:10 start, Kansas City's Gil Meche against veteran All-Star right-hander Curt Schilling. On third base for the Royals will be rookie Alex Gordon, probably the team's best prospect since Carlos Beltran.
The Royals believe the 200 credentialed journalists covering today's game is more than the number that came to Kansas City to cover Kansas City's world championship 22 years ago.
