The #7 Emporia State softball team swept Pittsburg State 12-0 and 9-1 in run rule shortened games on Wednesday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex. April Huddleston was four for seven on the day with five RBI and a home run for the Hornets.
Three-time Worth/MIAA Pitcher of the Week Courtney Reed went all 5.0 innings in the matinee for a two hit shutout. The Hornets got on the board early and often in the first game, scoring four runs in the first and reaching home at least once in every inning. Chelsea McClernon reached base three times and scored all three times. Eight of nine position players scored a run for ESU in the first game.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the third in the nightcap, the Hornets came back with four runs in the bottom of the frame including a three run home run by Miranda Campbell. ESU scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early with the final run coming home on a wild pitch.
The Hornets are back in action on Sunday when they play host to Minnesota State-Moorehead. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 11 a.m. at Turnbull Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
