Berroa faces competition for starting shortstop job

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) _ Kansas City manager Buddy Bell says Angel
Berroa has some competition for the starting
shortstop job.
Berroa was American League Rookie of the Year in 2003, but he
hasn't played as well since then.
Last year, he grounded into 21 double plays and his .190 road
batting average was the worst in the American League.
Bell says Berroa will be competing with veteran Alex Gonzalez
and Andres Blanco, who came up through the Royals minor league
system.
In spring training this year, Berroa has 12 strikeouts in 26
at-bats, without drawing a walk.
Berroa is signed to a contract through the 2008 season worth
eight-point-five (m) million dollars.
