ST. JOSPEH, Mo. – The No. 5 Washburn Lady Blues advanced to the NCAA
South Central Regional using stifling defense in a 54-39 win over the
No. 11 ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs 54-39. The Lady Blues will
play in their third straight regional final and fourth in the last
five years on Monday night at 7 p.m. against the winner of the
Missouri Western/Texas A&M-Commerce game.
Washburn took a 24-17 lead into the break as Amanda Holmes scored
seven points in the first half and Cindy Keeley scored six as the Lady
Blues took the lead. Washburn trailed only once in the game at 6-5
with 14:53.Washburn would keep the lead between one and seven the rest
of the half taking the seven point lead into the break.
In the second half, Washburn pushed the lead to 10 on their first
possession as Jessica Aebi hit a three and followed that with another
three on their next possession pushing the lead to 11 at 30-19.
Washburn would go on to lead by 15 as Holmes hit a laupup at 34-19 and
the Lady Buffs would not get closer than nine the rest of the way at
43-34 with 6:39 left as the Lady Blues held West Texas to two field
goals over the final 5:39 of the game.
Amanda Holmes recorded her ninth double double of the season and the
10th of her career with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Brooke Ubelaker led
the Washburn attatck with 15 points just missing a double double with
Washburn held West Texas to 14 of 44 from the field, with Lady Buffs
leading scorer Emily Brister hitting 8 of 13, for a 32 percent
The Lady Blues out rebounded the Lady Buffs 41 to 29 and only giving
up four offensive rebounds to West Texas.
