The University of Kansas (11-19) defeated Oklahoma State (20-10), 71-62, in the first round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla. Tuesday night. Kansas will face No. 3-seed Baylor Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
Junior Taylor McIntosh scored 16 of her career-high 19 points in the second half and added 13 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season and fourth of her career. Senior Shaquina Mosley pitched in 18 points and seven rebounds while freshmen Danielle McCray (16), Kelly Kohn (14) and Sade Morris (4) rounded out the scoring for Kansas.
KU controlled the opening minutes of the game, taking a 21-12 lead 5:35 into the contest. Oklahoma State quickly battled back and eventually took its first lead with 11:24 remaining in the half. Freshman Andrea Riley knocked down a 3-pointer as time expired in the first stanza to give the Cowgirls a 41-36 halftime lead - its largest margin of the game.
Kansas shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half and were led by McCray and Mosley with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Riley chipped in 12 in the first half while Rashidat Sadiq had 11, including a stretch where the senior scored eight-straight points for OSU.
Kansas held Oklahoma State without a field goal for the first 7:36 of the second half to take a 47-45 lead. The teams traded leads five time in the second half and 10 total.
After shooting 5-for-10 from behind the 3-point arc in the first half, the Cowgirls were held to just 1-for-16 (6.3 percent) from behind the arc in the second stanza.
The tournament victory was KU's first since defeating Iowa State in 2003. Kansas became the fourth No. 11-seed to knock off a 6-seed in the 11 years of the Big 12 Championship.
